MANILA – OFW Partylist Representative Aniceto "John" Bertiz III “definitely” violated protocols after snatching an airport security official’s ID, as seen in a video that went viral on social media over the weekend.
In a press briefing Monday, Office for Transportation Security (OTS) Administrator Art Evangelista said he is waiting for the guidance of the Department of Transportation (DOTr) and President Rodrigo Duterte before deciding on the matter.
“Pag pinagbasehan natin ang video, mayroon breach of protocol. Ang linaw naman eh. Kayo ba gagawin niyo 'yun na agawan niyo ng ID yung naka-duty?,” Evangelista told reporters.
(Based on the video, there's breach of protocol. It was clear. Would you snatch an ID of an officer on duty?)
“Hindi ko pa madesisyunan 'yan (I cannot decide on that), I have to wait for the Secretary of DOTr as well as the president but definitely may violation siya,” he added.
Evanglista said those who refused to be searched should not fly at all since security of the aircraft and the passengers “is paramount and universal.”
In a clip uploaded by several Facebook pages, Bertiz can be seen passing through a metal detector at the NAIA terminal 2, while supposedly refusing to remove his shoes.
Bertiz's chief of staff Jun Aguilar on Sunday said that some Chinese-looking passengers were not asked to remove their shoes during inspection.
Evangelista, however, said the issue is not about the alleged Chinese travelers but Bertiz' attitude towards security officers.
Airport authorities on Sunday said they are probing the matter while Bertiz had also apologized for the incident.
