MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte said the public should not take seriously his earlier statement that his eldest daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, should be his successor once he steps down.
In a recorded interview on state-run television that aired Friday evening, Duterte recalled proposing the idea as a joke during a dinner with Davao-based reporters last September 22.
“It started with a joke. Sabi nila, ‘Sinong papalit sa iyo sa ‘pagka-presidente kay…?’” Duterte said.
A report by the Philippine Star quoted Duterte as saying that he could not find any other better candidate than Sara to become the next president.
“And one thing about her is she is not a bigot,” Duterte told the reporters.
In the recorded interview, the President recalled asking the reporters if they want the equally feisty mayor as the next president.
“Sabi ko, ‘Gusto ninyo ng ganun? Si Inday.’ Eh nagtawanan. Pero as I have said, ayaw ni Inday na sa politika,” he said.
