MANILA (UPDATE)—An alleged member of the terrorist Maute group was arrested in Batangas City Saturday night, police said Sunday.
Jafar Dia Abdul Nazer was caught by the police and military on the strength of a search warrant for illegal possession of explosives.
Seized from Nazer's house in Barangay 24 were M67 grenade and high explosives, said Col. Alex Rillera, commander of 202nd Infantry Brigade.
The suspect, a native of Lanao del Sur, hid his identity while running a cellphone accessories shop in Batangas City Public Market, Calabarzon police also said.
The suspect was affiliated with Abu Dar and Abu Zacaria, the current leader of the Dawlah Islamiyah Lanao or Maute group that is operating in Lanao del Sur, it added.
Charges have been filed against Nazer who is currently under the custody of Police Regional Office (PRO) in Calabarzon.
