MANILA - The military on Thursday said it was waiting for clarification over 2 conflicting court orders on the imprisonment of retired Army Major Gen. Jovito Palparan.
Palparan was sentenced earlier this month to reclusion perpetua or imprisonment of up to 40 years after he was found guilty of the 2006 kidnapping and illegal detention of University of the Philippines (UP) students Sherlyn Cadapan and Karen Empeño.
The Malolos Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 15 ordered Palparan to serve his sentence at the New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa, noted Philippine Army Spokesman Lt. Col. Louie Villanueva.
The Malalos RTC Branch 19, however, ruled that the former commander of the Philippine Army's 7th Infantry Division should be in the safekeeping of the military as he is still facing a separate illegal detention case, Villanueva said.
Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra on Tuesday said Palparan has been committed to Bilibid, but later withdrew his statement with an apology.
