NEW YORK, United States—Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. said Wednesday (Manila time) he favors the reelection of US President Donald Trump in the 2020 polls because of what it might mean for Asia, specifically the 2 Koreas.
Asked who he prefers to win in the next US elections while speaking before the Asia Society in New York, Locsin said some people might not like what he would say.
“The truth is, I think he’ll [Trump will] surprise us,” Locsin said.
“They [US] reach out to [North] Korea. Isn’t that supposed to be a major threat? The guy [North Korean leader Kim Jong-un] could be crazy, unleash his weapons.”
“Only Trump was able to do it,” Locsin said, explaining that former US President Barack Obama—who he described as being a “great intellectual”—didn’t even think Kim merited a visit.
Locsin recalled how the American media "viciously" treated Trump.
“They [media] said [to Trump], ‘Don’t you think it’s dangerous talking to a lunatic?’ And he [Trump] answered, ‘That’s his problem.’”
“Someone with that sense of humor, self-deprecating, it might work,” Locsin said.
He further explained that while the signing of a denuclearization document did not push through, Trump might have done the right thing by not pressuring Kim.
“This guy might still get an agreement with Korea,” Locsin said. “The ultimate gain of that is the unification of Korea.”
“Which will create another fulcrum in the balance of power in Asia,” he said. “United Korea is not like Japan, another aircraft carrier off the coast of China. It’s a dagger in the heart of China.”
