MANILA - Philippine National Police (PNP) Director General Ronald "Bato" dela Rosa announced Monday that he will direct the Special Action Forces (SAF) to extend their deployment to the New Bilibid Prison (NBP), the alleged center of a multi-million peso narcotics ring under the previous administration.
"Nakikita naman natin na epektibo iyung SAF doon [We can see that the SAF has been effective there]," Dela Rosa told reporters at Camp Crame.
But Dela Rosa said he has to ensure a rotation of SAF troopers first in order to avoid familiarity between prisoners and their guards.
"I will have to talk to the director of SAF, kung pwedeng palitan ang tao, another SAF personnel na naman to avoid talaga iyung [if the commandos can be replaced with another batch of SAG personnel to] familiarity with the inmates," he said.
Over 300 SAF troopers were detailed at the NBP last July replacing prison guards of the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) who were ordered to take re-training.
Police commandos have since seized millions of pesos in cash as well as various contraband items from inmates.
A House of Representatives inquiry is currently tackling the proliferation of drugs inside the country's largest detention facility during the previous administration.
