MANILA - The Department of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday sought to assure the families of 7 Filipinos abducted by pirates in Nigeria that the government is working to free the hostages.
The Philippine embassies in Abuja and Berna are now coordinating with authorities in Nigeria and Switzerland on the condition and whereabouts of the Filipino seafarers.
The Philippine embassy in Abuja said the victims were among 12 crew members of Swiss merchant vessel MV Glarus who were reported to have been taken by pirates as the vessel was making its way from Lagos to Port Harcourt.
Ambassador to Nigeria Shirley Ho Vicario said 5 other Filipinos and 2 foreign nationals were left on board the vessel, but it was not immediately clear why they were not taken.
Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano has directed the Office of Migrant Workers Affairs (OMWA) to notify the families of the abducted Filipino seafarers.
