ILOCOS NORTE - A barangay kagawad said to be number one on the Banna, Ilocos Norte police's drug watchlist was shot by an unidentified gunman on Thursday.

The 41-year-old victim identified as Alwin Acosta is in the intensive care unit of Mariano Marcos Memorial Hospital and Medical Center in Batac after sustaining two gunshot wounds in his abdomen.

According to initial investigations, Acosta was sitting on his porch when he was first attacked.

He ran inside his house and tried to hide in the comfort room, where the suspect caught up with him and fired several times before fleeing the scene.

Acosta's daughter, who was in the house during the attack, sustained an injury in her left knee due to shrapnel.

Witnesses described the gunman as fair-skinned and slight of build.

While they had yet to find the gunman and determine the motive for the attack, authorities believe Acosta was shot because of his alleged involvement in the illegal drug trade.

Acosta was a self-confessed drug user and pusher, police said.
