MANILA -- Coming from various locations in Metro Manila, thousands of participants from government agencies, socio-civic organizations, and youths converged at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila on Sunday morning as part of an annual "alay lakad" or walk for a cause.
The walk raises funds through donations which would put underprivileged youths through school or vocational training.
Organizer Alay Lakad Foundation Inc. said 200,000 people participated in the event.
This year's walk hopes to raise P600,000 which would pay for 50,000 out-of-school youth, foundation president Frank Evaristo said.
The group raises money through donations of various amounts by individual or groups who join the walk.
Participating groups such as the military presented donation checks to the foundation.
Began in 1972, the walk for a cause has benefited 97,000 scholars in its nearly 50-year run.
Among the guests who attended the program were Social Work Secretary Rolando Bautista, MMDA chairman Danilo Lim, and TESDA Secretary Isidro Lapeña.
