MANILA (UPDATE) - A new tropical storm is expected to enter the Philippine area of responsibility on Sunday, the state weather bureau said Saturday.

PAGASA said the tropical depression east of southern Luzon has intensified into a tropical storm and was given the international name Trami.

It is expected to enter the country in the afternoon or evening of Sunday and will be named "Paeng."

As of 3 p.m., the center of Trami was spotted at 1,845 east of Central Luzon.

It is moving in a west, northwest direction at a speed of 20 kilometers per hour (kph) and packs maximum sustained winds of 85 kph and gusts of up to 105 kph.

"Tropical Storm Trami is still far away to have any effect in the country," the weather bureau said.

PAGASA said the tropical storm may intensify into a typhoon and may affect extreme Northern Luzon particularly the areas of Batanes and the Babuyan Group of Islands by Friday next week.

The weather system is approaching the country as northern Luzon reeled from the effects of Typhoon Ompong, the world's strongest storm by far this year, which triggered landslides and flooding and destroyed homes and other structures.
