DAVAO DEL NORTE—After being a member of the New People’s Army’s Front Committee 34, a 24-year-old man surrendered to the 60th Infantry Battalion in Barangay Gupitan, Kapalong town here on Sunday.
The man, identified only as "Jojo," was an Ata Manobo farmer before he joined the communist rebel group.
He said he joined the NPA in 2015, because the group promised to provide him and his family their needs.
“Lisod kayo sa bukid, walay tarong tulog kay walay direksiyon, walay balay mahigdaan," said Jojo, who wants to go back to his village and farm again.
(Life is hard in the mountains. You will not have a good sleep, because there's no sense of direction. There isn't a house you can sleep in.)
The 60th Infantry Battalion will enroll him in the Comprehensive Local Integration Program by the Department of the Interior and Local Government and the Department of Social Welfare and Development. He will be given cash incentives and livelihood assistance.
"Sa proteksiyon, di namin siya pababayaan, patuloy ang ating monitoring sa kanya. Naka-deploy ang mga sundalo natin. Andiyan din ang community support," Major Tony Lalas said.
