Air quality in some parts of Visayas deteriorates due to smog

MANILA - Residents in some areas in the Visayas and Mindanao regions are urged to take precautionary measures as air quality deteriorated making it unhealthy for sensitive groups of people.

According to Switzerland-based IQAir AirVisual that provides real-time air quality map, Legazpi's air quality index (AQI) was recorded at 111 as of 12 noon on Wednesday.

In Central Visayas, AQI was recorded at 119 in Cebu City while Calinan in Davao City is at 122.

Based on its color code orange, the air quality in those places may increase the risk of respiratory illnesses in sensitive people. It also recommends reduced outdoor activity and wearing of pollution masks to protect themselves. 

On Tuesday, the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) said haze from the forest fires in Indonesia have reached Davao Region and Soccsksargen.

Weather bureau Pagasa said the haze was being pulled by the prevailing southwest monsoon in the country.

Based on its top 5 world ranking as of Wednesday noon, IQAir AirVisual placed Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on top of its list of major cities at AQI 194 or unhealthy, followed by Kuching also in Malaysia (187); Dhaka in Bangladesh (173); Jakarta, Indonesia (169); and Singapore, Singapore (165).
