BACOLOD CITY - Three fishermen from the municipality of Pulupandan, Negros Occidental were rescued at sea on Saturday.
They tried to catch fish in Barangay Patic despite warnings of rough waters due to the southwest monsoon and Typhoon Ompong (Mangkhut).
Their pump boat capsized at sea after it was hit by huge waves. Several residents along the shoreline were able to spot them from afar and sought help from the barangay rescue group.
After they were rescued by the Philippine Coast Guard and the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office, the fishermen were brought to the local health office for a check up.
All storm signals were lowered on Sunday as Ompong, the strongest typhoon to hit the country so far this year, churned towards Hong Kong. Monsoon rains will persist over Luzon before the weather improves starting Monday, according to state weather bureau PAGASA.
