MANILA - Chief presidential legal counsel Salvador Panelo on Friday questioned the credibility and timing of the testimony of Edgar Matobato.
Panelo said Matobato’s statements against President Duterte were “all lies” and asked why Matobato came out with his testimony only now.

Panelo said this will not stop Duterte from his campaign against drugs. He described Matobato’s testimony as “kwentong kutsero” and urged De Lima to “do your homework.”
He said whoever is behind his testimony is out to destroy the President’s name.
“He is a perjured witness. The fact alone that he is being with the [Department of Justice] Witness Protection Program for how many years, two, three years, e di ba dapat noon pa niya sinabi lahat ng pinagsasabi niya… Bakit ngayon lang?" he said.
“Whoever is behind dito sa testigong ito, ang layunin lang nito ay sirain ang pangalan ng Presidente at ang kanyang pamilya. No amount of black propaganda, no amount of sinister ploy or plan will stop the President from his relentless campaign against the drug menace and terrorism. Kahit anong gawin nila.”
Meantime, Panelo said there is no basis for an independent probe on allegations of extra-judicial killings and other human rights violations in the Philippines.
Reacting to a reported statement of Human Rights Watch that an independent body should investigate alleged human rights violation in the Philippines, the lawyer said: “Sinabi ko na noon na nagpapahayag sila nang hindi nila iniimbestigahan. Sabi ko dapat andito.
“Walang basis ever since… Kaya nga sinasabi ko sa kanila noon you have been receiving wrong information, you are acting on the basis of wrong information. Do your homework, pareho rin sa UN.”
