MANILA -- Former senator Rene Espina, who authored the country's first anti-drug law, has passed away.
Malacañang on Sunday mourned the death of Espina, who crafted the Dangerous Drugs Act of 1972.
"The Filipino people are indeed grateful for the long track record of public service Senator Espina gave to the nation," Presidential spokesperson Salvador Panelo said.
"May eternal rest grant to this faithful servant of the Lord, may perpetual light shine upon him, and may his soul, through the mercy of God, rest in peace."
Espina also served as governor of Cebu from 1963 to 1969 and as secretary of the Department of Public Works, Transportation, and Communication under the Marcos administration.
