MANILA- House Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez on Friday said Commission on Human Rights (CHR) Chairman Chito Gascon should be ashamed for refusing to resign from his post.
Alvarez said Gascon, the Liberal Party's director general from 2008 to 2011, has been showing his biases in his actions as CHR chairperson.
Gascon has been attacked by allies of President Rodrigo Duterte since opposing the administration's brutal war on drugs.
Alvarez mentioned how Gascon was able to visit detained Sen. Leila de Lima, a Liberal Party member, but was not able to visit other prisoners.
Bakit isang tao lang?" he said.
Gascon earlier rejected calls for him to resign after the House of Representatives voted to slash the CHR's budget to only P1,000 from the original budget proposal of P623.38 million.
He instead maintained that CHR operations will continue since the budget bill still has to go through the Senate and the bicameral conference committee before it is signed by the President.
"The commission will continue to operate so long as the Constitution operates. Despite this defeat in the House, we look forward to defending our budget in the Senate and we hope that reason...will prevail both at the Senate as well as in the bicameral conference committee," he said.
