MANILA - The Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced Thursday a ban on firearms, explosives, and other deadly weapons, among other prohibitions starting Sept. 23 to Oct. 23, due to the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) elections.

Comelec’s Resolution No. 10197 issued Thursday prohibits:

- bearing, carrying or transporting firearms or other deadly weapons, unless authorized by the Comelec

- the employment, availment or engagement of the services of security personnel or body guards unless authorized by the Comelec

- the transport and delivery of firearms and/or its parts, ammunition and/or its components, and explosives and/or its components

The commission’s Committee on the Ban on Firearms and Security Personnel will accept applications for the issuance of authority to bear, carry or transport firearms or deadly weapons starting Sept. 21.

On Monday, the House of Representatives approved on third and final reading House Bill 6308, postponing the October 2017 Barangay and SK Elections to May 2018.

The bill suggests the postponement of the village and SK elections scheduled on October 23 to the 2nd Monday of May 2018, with the next election after that scheduled to the 2nd Monday of May 2020 and every 3 years thereafter. Since the postponement has not been fully approved, implementing rules still stand.
