BACOLOD - Some 1,500 boxes of fake cigarettes and filter rods were seized by authorities in a warehouse at Bredco Port, Bacolod City on Thursday.
Police, along with officials from the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), confiscated the boxes, which contained 50 rims of fake cigarettes each.
Antonio Jonathan Jaminola, director of BIR Region 12, said the fake cigarettes would bring P14 million in excise tax alone if they weren't seized.
Operatives said all containing packs of the cigarettes had the same serial numbers, which led to the suspicion they were fake.
BIR said cigarette packs which sell under P50 are usually fake since excise tax placed on cigarettes are P35.
Authorities have yet to determine the total worth of the seized contraband, including the filter rods that are used to make cigarette filters.
Jaminola said the manufacturer of the cigarettes may be penalized P140 million.
The manufacturer, who was not named, will face charges for violating the Consumer Product Act.
