ZAMBOANGA CITY - The city government on Thursday suspended classes in all levels here, while the Philippine Coast Guard prohibited vessels from leaving the port as Typhoon Ompong barrels closer to the country.
Trips bound for Jolo, Sulu, Bongao and Tawi-tawi have been canceled, while trips to Isabela City and Basilan will still continue, the Coast Guard said.
The City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office has alerted all barangays in coastal and river areas to be ready for possible preemptive evacuation.
Incessant rains and strong winds are expected to batter Zamboanga Peninsula as Ompong's trough is expected to hit the area, state weather bureau PAGASA said.
Storm signal number 1 was raised in at least 16 areas as of 5 a.m., state weather bureau PAGASA said.
