MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte said Thursday he would die without women in his life.
Duterte, who described himself as a “lover of a woman,” made the remark as he jokingly asked if ladies in Bataan wear bikinis during beach trips.
“Dito sa inyo may resort? May naliligo? Nagbikini-bikini rin sila? Kasi magpasyal ako kung... Not really because I am a misogynist,” he said in a speech during the inauguration of the Bataan Government Center and Business Hub in Balanga City..
(Is there a resort here? Is someone swimming? Do they wear bikinis? Because I’d visit…Not really because I am a misogynist)
“I am just a lover of a woman. Mamatay ako ‘pag walang babae, sa totoo lang. At lahat dito 'yung mga mayor ninyo sobra kalahati niyan may mga babae din 'yan na iba,” he said to the applause of the crowd.
(To be honest, I’ll die without women. All of your mayors here, more than half of them have other women.)
Duterte, who has repeatedly courted controversy for his comments about women, has several times explained that he has 2 families.
He has 3 children with his previous wife Elizabeth Zimmerman, and has a daughter with his common-law wife Honeylet Avanceña.
As a presidential candidate, he was heavily criticized for saying he should have had first dibs on an Australian woman raped in Davao City 1989.
Last year, he drew flak for kissing a Filipino migrant worker amid a speech in South Korea and for saying that he once confessed to a Catholic priest about touching his maid while she was asleep.
He also drew criticism for threatening to shoot female rebels in the genitals, and for saying that Davao City has the highest number of rape cases in the country because it has many beautiful women.
Malacañang has several times asserted that Duterte's jokes must be taken as they are, saying he has "shown his respect and admiration to women and their abilities and competencies" as he has appointed key female government officials.
