MANILA - President Rodrigo Duterte will not attend this year’s World Economic Forum on ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and has instead sent his trade secretary to the international forum.
Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez told ABS-CBN News he will be flying to Hanoi, Vietnam, this year’s WEF host, on Tuesday, September 11.
Duterte attended last year’s WEF on ASEAN in Cambodia and called for a drug-free ASEAN youth.
His economic managers also presented the so-called “Dutertenomics”, the economic blueprint of the administration which entails infrastructure projects to spur economic growth.
The Philippines was also chair of the ASEAN last year, making the President’s presence at the event even more important.
The WEF on ASEAN gathers the region’s political, business, academic and civil society leaders.
Duterte sent Lopez to the WEF as the government deals with pressing matters such as the rising prices of basic goods.
The President is set to address the nation on Tuesday and on Thursday will observe the test firing of a missile installed on BRP Davao del Sur.
