DAVAO CITY—Flight observer Ryx Gil Laput just finished flying school in Manila last April and wanted to fulfill his dream of becoming a pilot.

But that ended when an air ambulance he was on crashed in Laguna on September 1. He and 8 others died in the incident.

The remains of the 23-year-old were brought to his hometown here Friday.

The family has called on the company that operated the plane to assist them financially, and urged authorities to conduct a speedy investigation.

His father, Armando Laput, said he had not seen his son for a year, because he was working in Nigeria as an engineer.

"When he was young, he was really interested to study in a flying school and become a pilot someday. I always told him, 'We can’t pay for it, Ryx. That costs millions. But I will work hard for it because that’s what you want,' " Armando said.
