MANILA—President Rodrigo Duterte's bar examination results should be checked to see if he really earned his title as lawyer, opposition Senator Antonio Trillanes IV said Saturday minutes after the chief executive said he had the prerogative to void amnesties.

Duterte invalidated Trillanes' amnesty earlier this week through Proclamation 572, which ruled that the former mutineer failed to submit an amnesty application form that must include a clear admission of guilt.

"This guy is amazingly stupid. Talagang lumalabas, he can't hide it," Trillanes told reporters.

Trillanes said he was "shocked" that Duterte, who passed the 1972 bar examinations, was not aware that the 1987 Constitution only gives the president the prerogative to grant amnesties, but not to revoke them.

"Sorry sa San Beda College of Law, but I am not impressed with your product which is Mr. Duterte," he said.

"Ang kailangan review-hin kung nakapasa ba talaga ng bar itong si Duterte. Baka nilakad lang ito ng tatay niya kasi governor ang tatay niya noon."

(We have to review if Duterte really passed the Bar or if his father who used to be governor pulled some strings.)

Earlier this year, Duterte told San Beda graduates that he was not allowed by their alma mater to attend commencement exercise after he shot one of his schoolmates when he was a senior law student.

San Beda later issued a pardon which allowed me to take the bar exams later that year, Duterte said during the graduation ceremony where he served as guest of honor.

Trillanes said he would move to have Duterte's bar exam records reviewed. "Someday, ipapahanap natin 'yan," he said.
