MANILA— The Makati City Police on Friday arrested the alleged leader and members of the notorious Alao robbery-holdup group, which has preyed on bus passengers along EDSA's stretch in Makati and Mandaluyong.
Southern Police District Director Tomas Apolinario said robbery incidents occurred on Aug. 29 and 30 on the southbound lane of EDSA-Guadalupe, which led to a follow-up operation.
Makati police officers arrested alleged gang leader Intoy Alao and five of his cohorts, while the Mandaluyong Police arrested two more members.
Explaining the group's modus operandi, Apolinario said members of the group board buses in pairs at separate points and then declare a robbery.
"Modus ng grupo, sasakay sa may Guadalupe pa-Southbound, sasakay sila ng bus doon, minsan 2 silang sasakay. Pagdating sa Estrella, may sasakay na namang dalawa. At doon mismo magde-declare sila ng holdap," Apolinario said.
"May times naman na sabay-sabay silang sasakay, manghoholdap. Bago dumating ng Buendia, bababa lahat sila," he said.
Various incidents of robbery and cellphone snatching since 2015 have been attributed to the group.
