MANILA- (UPDATE) Supreme Court Associate Justice Diosdado Peralta will handle Senator Antonio Trillanes IV's petition to block President Rodrigo Duterte's withdrawal of his amnesty.
Trillanes on Thursday sought help from the Supreme Court to block Duterte's nullification of his amnesty.
The senator's lawyer, Rey Robles, filed before the Supreme Court a petition for temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction against the amnesty withdrawal, arguing that Duterte's order was "grossly illegal" because he did "not have the power to issue warrants of arrest."
Duterte voided the amnesty that absolves Trillanes of charges for leading 2 failed mutinies, saying the soldier-turned-lawmaker failed to formally apply for it and admit his guilt.
The President also directed security forces to "employ all lawful means" to apprehend Trillanes.
Trillanes however dismissed the allegations and presented documents relevant to his amnesty grant such as the Department of National Defense's 2011 list of amnesty applicants which included his name.
The former Navy lieutenant has been holed up in his office at the Senate since Tuesday.
