The once powerful Liberal Party (LP) isn’t happy that one of its own endorsed an impeachment complaint against Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.
In a joint statement, LP President Senator Francis Pangilinan and Secretary General Quezon City Rep. Kit Belmonte said Samar Rep. Edgar Sarmiento's endorsement of the impeachment complaint "is a cause for concern."
Sereno was appointed chief justice by former President Noynoy Aquino to replace Renato Corona, who was impeached and ousted by the then LP-controlled Congress.
Sarmiento was one of the 25 House members who supported the complaint filed by lawyer Lorenzo Gadon on August 30.
“While the party has yet to firm up its position on the matter, and while it recognizes the right of its members to take a position on issues, Representative Sarmiento could have consulted the party leadership before making such important decision," the statement read.
The LP leaders said the impeachment process is a "double-edged sword because it "can strengthen democracy" but can also "destroy institutions."
“Objective discussions among party members will help thresh out issues like this," they said.
The Sarmiento camp has declined to comment on the issue.
