ILOCOS NORTE – As oral arguments are ongoing in the Supreme Court regarding petitions to halt the burial of late President Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani, Ilocano motorcycle riders have organized a "unity ride" in support of President Rodrigo Duterte's controversial order.
Gary Ronquillo, coordinator of the Motorcycle Philippines Federation-Ilocos Norte Chapter (MCPF), said around 200 riders are expected to participate in the event, which is set on September 11, the late strongman's date of birth.
"Siyempre Ilocano tayo at gusto namin ipakita na kami, tayong mga Ilocano ay [nagkakaisa] para sa hangarin na paglibing sa kanya sa Libingan ng mga Bayani (Of course, as Ilocanos we want to show that we are one in our goal to let Marcos be buried at the Heroes' Cemetery)," Ronquillo said.
Marcos deserves to be buried at the Libingan because of his accomplishments as a president and a soldier, Ronquillo said.
"Marami siyang nagawa na hanggang ngayon ay pinapakinabangan pa nating mga Pilipino."
He also hopes that the Supreme Court will soon finish its oral arguments, and reject petitions opposing the burial.
The provincial government of Ilocos Norte is finalizing a three-day "Marcos Fiesta" to celebrate the former president's 99th birth anniversary.
