MANILA- Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo said Thursday the Presidential Security Group (PSG) should launch an investigation on the entry of convicted rapist-killer Antonio Sanchez’s family into Malacañang, after saying he didn’t know how they managed to come to his office.
Panelo, who earlier admitted to meeting the Sanchez family twice in his office at the New Executive Building in Malacañang, also criticized the “lax” security measures in the area where his office is located.
“As I said, we don’t even know how they were able to come,” Panelo said.
“Let the PSG investigate. How were they able to enter without our knowledge?” he said, noting that the PSG “really have to be strict” in implementing security measures.
Panelo claimed that even his staff were not aware that the Sanchez family would be coming to his office.
“I think that’s a security problem of the PSG, not us. Lax, siguro iyong lax,” he said.
Records show that Sanchez’s wife, Elvira, and their daughter, Marie Antonelvie, met with Panelo twice in Malacañang, on Feb. 7 and on 26.
A separate logbook in Panelo’s office, meanwhile, shows that the family went to see the Duterte spokesman again in Feb. 21 but the meeting did not push through since he was not in his office.
Panelo came under fire for his referral of a Feb. 8 letter written by Marie Antonelvie, regarding her father's plea for executive clemency before the Board of Pardons and Parole. The request was denied.
On Wednesday night, President Rodrigo Duterte affirmed his confidence in Panelo and cleared the latter of any wrongdoing in connection with the latter's referral-letter.
