MANILA—A man was arrested after allegedly trying to extort P11,000 from a student enrolling at Universidad de Manila (UdM) in Paco.
Police arrested Celso Dimanlig, 50, after a complaint filed by the student's mother, who said Dimanlig demanded money to ensure the victim's enrollment.
Mayor Isko Moreno presented Dimanlig before the media Thursday.
"Kaya itinatag ang UdM ay para makapagbigay ang pamahalaan ng pagkakataon sa mga bata na mahihirap na makapag-aral," Moreno said.
(UdM was established so the government can give underprivileged youth a chance to study.)
"Ano namang uri ng tao ito? Libre naman ang PLM (Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila), UdM. All they have to do is pass the exam," he said. "Ano ito, may-ari ng paaralan?"
(What kind of person is this? PLM and UdM are free. All students have to do to be enrolled is pass an exam. Who is he, the school's owner?)
The suspect faces charges for violation of Article 293 (robbery extortion) and Article 315 (swindling or estafa) of the Revised Penal Code.
