MANILA- Allegations of corruption against Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno should be raised at the proper forum through the impeachment process, a lawmaker said Tuesday.
Pwersa ng Bayaning Atleta (PBA) Party List Rep. Jericho Nograles, one of the lawmakers who endorsed the impeachment complaint against Sereno, said although he did not support all of the allegations against the Chief Justice in the complaint, he wants the case to be tried at a proper forum.
"I wanted to put it in the proper venue. There's too much accusation here and there and it is important that the chief magistrate of this land will be given the opportunity to speak at the appropriate forum," he said on ANC's "Beyond Politics."
Nograles was among 25 lawmakers who endorsed the ouster bid filed by lawyer Lorenzo Gadon filed against Sereno.
In his complaint, Gadon alleged that Sereno failed to make truthful declarations in her statement of assets, liabilities, and net worth or SALN—the same allegation that got her predecessor, the late former Chief Justice Renato Corona, ousted from office.
Nograles said he endorsed Gadon's complaint since it had attachments of certified true copies of documents that "seem to corroborate" the charges against Sereno.
"There is some proof attached to the complaint," he said.
Despite the ouster bid against her, Sereno has remained unfazed and maintains that she has not been extravagant in her expenses as the chief justice.
"I have lived a life of modesty. I have been prudent in the use of court expenses," she previously said.
