MANILA - Chief Justice Teresita Leonardo-De Castro took her oath Friday before President Rodrigo Duterte.

De Castro is Duterte’s first chief justice appointee. The President will make another pick for top magistrate as De Castro will retire on October 8.
She replaced Maria Lourdes Sereno, who was ousted from her post via a quo warranto petition for supposedly failing to declare her wealth in full when she applied for the post. De Castro is considered one of the toughest critics of the ousted magistrate.
Duterte has said he appointed De Castro based on seniority and meritocracy, amid criticisms the appointment was a reward.
De Castro, for her part, asserted her independence from the President. Prior to her appointment and oath-taking Friday, De Castro said she had not met the President yet.
