MANILA - Tourism Sec. Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said Friday projects entered into by her agency need clearance from the environment department before implementation.
Puyat issued the statement when asked about a report that trees were being illegally cut to give way to resort development in Palawan.
"lahat ng galaw namin sa tourism, we pass through first the DENR and pag hindi pumasa sa kanila, hindi kami magpo-proceed with any project," she said.
(Our every move in tourism has to pass through DENR first. If the DENR doesn't approve, we can't proceed.
Puyat cited the case of Boracay, which underwent a massive cleanup last year before reopening to tourists.
She said it was "impossible" for the Department of Tourism not to comply with environment laws, especially after the six-month long closure of Boracay last year that gave way to a massive cleanup.
