MANILA - The Catholic Church released Friday a special prayer for healing of patients suffering from dengue and leptospirosis in wake of rising cases of the illnesses in the country.

Fr. Reginald Malicdem, chancellor of the Manila Archdiocese, said in a circular that due to the "alarming number of those afflicted by dengue fever and leptospirosis in the country," Cardinal Luis Antonio G. Tagle has requested the faithful to "pray for the healing of those who are sick and for the protection of everyone from these and other illness."

The "Oratio Imperata," or a general prayer which a priest or bishop publicly prays when a disaster or calamity happens, will be prayed at all masses in the archdiocese starting Sunday, Sept. 1, 2019, Malicdem said.

The health department (DOH) previously said around 208,000 dengue cases have been recorded this year alone. It recorded 807 deaths due to the virus from Jan. 1 to Aug. 3.

The overall tally is reportedly 8,000 cases away from overtaking the country's worst dengue record.

DOH also said that around 980 leptospirosis cases have been recorded and that 112 deaths have occurred due to the bacterial disease.
