MANILA - A magnitude 5.1 earthquake off Calayan islands in Cagayan province rattled the neighboring Ilocos region early Wednesday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
The quake, which was tectonic in origin, struck 33 kilometers southwest of Calayan at 06:08: a.m. and had a depth of 13 kilometers below the seabed.
The tremor was felt at Intensity 2 in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte. Phivolcs said this intensity may cause hanging objects to swing lightly.
Instrumental Intensity 2 meanwhile was also recorded in Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte and Sinait, Ilocos Sur.
"Sa tingin namin, ito po ay hindi man maging destructive kasi hindi malayo na po sa isla... Kahit nasa dagat ito, dahil magnitude 5.1 lang, hindi rin po ito magdudulot ng tsunami," Phivolcs director Renato Solidum told DZMM.
The quake however may trigger aftershocks, Phivolcs warned.
