MANILA - The Bureau of Immigration (BI) confirmed Thursday that 4 Chinese drug convicts were released from the national penitentiary, and are now under BI custody for deportation.

In a statement, BI said Chan Chit Yue, Kin San Ho, Ching Che, and Wu Hing Sum were transferred to the BI Warden's Facility from the New Bilibid Prisons' Maximum Security Compound.

Sen. Panfilo Lacson earlier said the 4 were freed due to good conduct time allowance or GCTA.

"(We) exercise its ministerial function to deport foreign nationals who completed the service of sentence in Philippine prison," BI said, adding official documents, like NBI clearance, are being completed so the deportation can continue.

In an interview with DZMM, Lacson expressed concern that the GCTA could lead to corruption.
