MANILA - The alleged mastermind of the car rental scam dubbed "rent-tangay" or "rent-sangla" has been arrested for estafa, police said Tuesday.
The Philippine National Police Highway Patrol Group (PNP-HPG) said suspect Rafaela Anunciacion was arrested in a mall in San Pedro, Laguna last Saturday.
Police said Anunciacion was arrested for a separate estafa case in 2017 but had posted bail. They urged the victims to jointly file syndicated estafa charges so she would not be able to post bail.
Anunciacion, for her part, said she is ready to face the complaints against her.
"Nandito ako para harapin ang lahat ng allegation sa akin (I am here to face all allegations against me)," she said.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) has already recommended syndicated estafa charges against Anunciacion for allegedly enticing victims to invest in a fictitious car rental business.
The DOJ also said in a resolution that the suspect's company, Creative Tempo, though properly registered, was intended to be a manpower firm.
Aside from Anunciacion, the DOJ has also filed syndicated estafa charges against Marilou Cruz, Edgardo Ramos, Alfredo Ronquillo, Eliseo Cortez, Anastacia Cauyan, Sabina Torrea, and Leonardo Torrea.
