MANILA - Detained senator Leila de Lima filed a resolution seeking an inquiry into the unclaimed cash grants for the beneficiaries of the government's Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program or "4Ps."
A recent Commission on Audit report showed that around P1.3 billion were not withdrawn by the supposed beneficiaries of the conditional cash transfers in 2017.
State auditors added that the grants were not withdrawn by the supposed beneficiaries for a period ranging from 30 to 2,190 days after payout.
De Lima, chairperson of the social justice, welfare and rural development panel, said the government must ensure that cash grants intended for the poor reach its beneficiaries, especially as consumer prices rise.
"The failure of these funds to reach qualified beneficiaries is an inefficiency that we cannot afford to have as many of our countrymen are in dire need of assistance, especially now that we are experiencing crippling levels of inflation," she said.
The senator said she hoped to determine whether the failure to withdraw the cash grants could be attributed to lack of access to banking facilities among other factors.
