MANILA - (UPDATED) Policemen shot dead an inmate at Misamis Oriental Provincial Jail in Cagayan de Oro City after he took a fellow detainee hostage on Sunday.

Initial reports said suspect Jomar Itong held two ice picks to the neck of fellow inmate Vicente Libona after a Mass at 8 a.m., and dragged the hostage to the back of the detention facility.

Onlookers gaze at an area inside the Miasmis Oriental Provincial Jail, where an inmate held hostage his fellow detainee.

For three hours, the negotiating team led by city officials and jail warden Dominador Tagarda talked to Itong, who demanded authorities to ask his family in Bukidnon to visit him.

At around noon, however, Itong attempted to stab the hostage's chest, prompting authorities to shoot him, city police chief Senior Superintendent Ronnie Cariaga said.

The suspect died instantly from his gunshot wounds while Libona, who sustained a shallow stab wound on his chest, was secured safely by authorities.

This photo shows inmate Vicente Libona with a bandage on his chest.

Libona and the suspect had occupied the same prison cell.

Libona said Itong had difficulty sleeping on Saturday night and appeared to be anxious.

Sunday's hostage crisis allegedly started when Libona tried to talk with his cell mate regarding his apparent problem.

Itong was jailed in 2015 for serious illegal detention while Libona was detained in 2008 for robbery with homicide.
