MANILA -- An additional 180,000 bags of rice was sent by the National Food Authority (NFA) to Zamboanga City on Saturday amid the shortage of supply there.
NFA spokesperson Rex Estoperez said the additional supply will serve as buffer stocks.
Zamboanga City declared a state of calamity on Wednesday as rice prices soared.
Commercial rice meant for Zamboanga had been diverted to other parts of Mindanao like Jolo, Basilan, and Tawi-tawi.
Prices of rice in Zamboanga City have risen from P54 to P70 per kilogram, while NFA rice is sold at P32 per kilo. The normal price of NFA rice is pegged at P27 per kilo, according to Estoperez.
The NFA also sent 10,000 bags of rice each to the provinces of Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi, Estoperez said.
