MANILA - A suspected gun for hire employed by "VIP inmates" of the national penitentiary was killed in a drug bust in Caloocan City on Thursday, police said.

The suspect, Adonis dela Rosa, was shot for resisting arrest after authorities raided his boarding house in Dagat-Dagatan village, police said.

Dela Rosa would kill drug distributors who failed to remit money to convicted drug lords inside the New Bilibid Prisons, said Inspector Ali Duterte of the Caloocan police special operations unit.

The suspect, Duterte said, was tagged in a series of fatal shootings in the Camanava (Caloocan, Malabon, Navotas, Valenzuela) area between 2015 and June this year.

Police had difficulty tracking down Dela Rosa because he frequently changed his address.

The owner of Dela Rosa's boardinghouse said the suspect often had unidentified guests in his room.

President Rodrigo Duterte earlier claimed that convicted drug lords were able to continue their illegal operations and live luxurious lives even while inside the NBP.
