President Rodrigo Duterte and former President and now Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal Arroyo will feast on poultry delicacies in San Fernando, Pampanga next week to prove that poultry goods from central Luzon are now bird flu-free, Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said Thursday.
"Poultry stakeholders requested for President Duterte to eat balut. Seeing the president eat balut is the best assurance," Piñol told reporters.
Duterte, Arroyo, agriculture department, and local executives will feast on chicken barbecue, duck eggs, and fried native ducks.
This scheduled event comes after broiler chicken prices dropped to P25 per kilo from P90 as consumers continue to avoid buying poultry products due to fears about the avian flu.
The Department of Agriculture (DA) confirmed on Thursday that the virus found in Pampanga was the H5N6 strain which is transmittable to humans.
But DA officials said transmission and mortality rates from the H5N6 virus remain low worldwide.
