MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte said Tuesday he has asked former defense chief Gilberto "Gibo" Teodoro to return to his old position, while he considers an ambassadorial post for incumbent Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana.

Teodoro, who lost to Duterte’s immediate predecessor, Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino in the 2010 elections, had turned down an earlier offer by the President to return to his old post at the Department of National Defense (DND).

“I hope he [Teodoro] does accept the offer," Duterte told an audience of military generals in Malacanang. He did not say where the foreign post was.

The President said his offer for Teodoro should have reached the Harvard Law-trained former congressman on Tuesday.

“Si Gibo, I offered to help him during the last elections. Tatakbo ka ba? Kasi kung tatakbo ka, susuporta ako sa ‘yo [Are you running? If you are, I will support you],” Duterte said.

Teodoro has not run for any elective position since losing the 2010 elections. He has also kept low key in politics but served in the boards of BDO Unibank, the country’s largest lender, and Sagittarius Mines Inc.
