ZAMBOANGA CITY—About 6 big boxes containing imported cigarettes of different brands were seized in this city on Tuesday night.
The boxes were found on MV Trisha Kerstin 1, a commercial vessel that originated from Isabela City in Basilan.
Operatives from the Philippine Coast Guard Intelligence Unit, Task Force Aduana, the Port Police, the Bureau of Customs and the Joint Task Force Zamboanga inspected the vessel upon its arrival in this city's port.
The boxes are currently stored in a Customs facility.
Authorities said they have yet to determine the market value of the seized products, as an inventory is scheduled Thursday.
Meanwhile, an investigation is underway to identify the owner of the confiscated cigarettes.
Last week, the Customs bureau destroyed P2.3 million worth of smuggled cigarettes confiscated at the local port during anti-smuggling operations.
