The reported death of ducks in a farm in Butuan City was not caused by bird flu, Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said Monday.
"Regional Animal Disease Detection Laboratory inspections showed the duck farm was overcrowded and there was very poor farm management, especially in maintaining cleanliness, which was identified as the immediate cause of the deaths," Piñol said in a statement.
Despite this, the Department of Agriculture thanked the farm owner in Butuan "for immediately reporting the unusual number of duck deaths in his farm."
An avian flu outbreak earlier broke out in Pampanga after a farmer failed to immediately report poultry deaths in his ward.
The virus spread to Nueva Ecija after a week.
The government has ordered the culling of at least 600,000 fowls, and banned the shipment of poultry products from Luzon to Visayas and Mindanao to curb the spread of the disease.
