MANILA - The Department of Agriculture (DA) on Sunday has finished culling 200,000 chickens from the villages within the 1-kilometer radius contained area in San Luis, Pampanga where a bird flu outbreak was declared.
Some owners of the poultry farms within the 7-kilometer controlled areas have also started to voluntarily cull their fowls as the government battles the avian flu.
Among these villages in the controlled area are barangays Sta. Maria, San Isidrio Laug in Mexico town, as well as Barangay San Pedro in San Simon town.
Authorities have not determined the cause of the bird flu outbreak, nor the exact strain, on which tests are being done in Australia.
There has been no case of human transmission in either outbreak, and early tests have ruled out highly pathogenic H5N1 strain. -- with report from Reuters
