ILOCOS SUR – Unidentified assailants shot two alleged drug personalities in separate incidents in the province Thursday night, killing one and severely injuring the other.

Eugene Vergara, 51, was shot several times by suspects who forcibly entered his house in Barangay Namnama, Sinait. His wife Gloria was wounded by a stray bullet which hit her lower right arm.

"Ang sabi ng asawa niya, kumatok [ang mga suspek] tapos nang pagbuksan niya bigla na lang [silang] pinagbabaril. Ang nakita lang ng asawa nito ay yung kamay ng naka-jacket. Hindi na niya alam kung mayroong iba pang pumasok dahil nagtago na rin siya," said town chief of police Chief Inspector Reynaldo Mendoza Jr.

("His wife said the suspects knocked, then they started shooting when she opened the door. All she saw was the hand of the one in a jacket. She did not see if anyone else entered because she already hid.")

Retrieved from the crime scene were four empty caliber .45 bullet shells, ten empty caliber 9mm bullet shells, four deformed bullet slugs, and one metallic fragment.

OPERATION TOKHANG VICTIMS

In the town of Magsingal, a 29-year-old farmer was shot several times by an unidentified gunman in front of his house in Barangay Patong.

According to investigators, farmer Franky Usana was making a bamboo tie when the man shot him, hitting his face, left arm and legs.

The victim managed to take cover and escaped. He sought help from authorities and was sent to a hospital. He is now out of danger.

Ten empty shells of a caliber 5.56mm firearm were found and taken from the crime scene.

Authorities are now looking into the possibility that the incidents might be related to the victims’ alleged involvement in illegal drugs.

Vergara surrendered to police as part of Operation Tokhang on July 10, 2016, while Usana also surrendered three weeks ago.

"[Si Usana], categorized as pusher," town chief of police Instpector Arcadio Vilora. "Tinitingnan natin kung may koneskyon ito sa pamamaril sa kanya, baka kasi may mga obligasyon pa siya sa mga dati niyang kasamahan," he said.

("Usana is categorized as a pusher. We're looking if there is a connection between his involvement in drugs to the shooting, because he might still have obligations to his former cohorts.")
