ZAMBOANGA CITY - The Bureau of Animal Industry Veterinary Quarantine Services destroyed 14,040 duck eggs confiscated at the Zamboanga City Port area to prevent the possible spread of avian flu.

Dr. Leo Galicia, of the Bureau of Animal Industry said their inventory led to at least 39 crates of duck eggs with 360 pieces per crate.

Galicia said the shipper sources the duck eggs regularly from Pampanga.

Due to the outbreak of bird flu in Pampanga, the shipment of any fowl products coming from the province is banned.

As a matter of procedure, the eggs were burned with gasoline in an excavation hole before they were buried 6 feet underground.

The disposal of the eggs was conducted inside the Quarantine Services compound.

Galicia said a local inter-agency task force will be formed next week to intensify monitoring of ports, airports and bus terminal on possible entry of chicken or fowls to Mindanao following the outbreak declared in Pampanga.
