MANILA - The mayor of Naguilian, La Union who was included in President Rodrigo Duterte's list of "narco-politicians" claimed Thursday that a former lawmaker heads the illegal drug trade in the province.

Speaking to radio DZMM, Mayor Reynaldo Flores named former congressman Thomas Dumpit Jr. as the mastermind of a "shabu" laboratory in Bimmotobot village that was raided by the police in 2008.

Flores noted that Dumpit was one of the most influential politicians in the province at that time. "Siya ang kinatatakutan ng mga tao dito noon [Residents feared him]" he said.

The mayor said he was part of the group that busted the "shabu" laboratory, but Dumpit linked him to the facility to get back at him.

The former lawmaker, he said, was mad at him after he broke off their political alliance in 2007.

Flores said Duterte might have included him in his list due to Dumpit's accusation.

The mayor said Duterte's allegation would give him the chance to clear his name.
