The Department of Agriculture on Thursday suspended cockfighting in Pampanga for two weeks as health and veterinary experts try to contain the spread of avian flu in the province.
Agriculture Secretary Emmanuel Piñol announced the suspension order during an inspection of a processed food factory in Pampanga.
The province has been placed under a state of calamity after the avian disease killed nearly 40,000 birds in 36 farms.
Piñol earlier banned the delivery of poultry from Luzon to other parts of the country and ordered the culling of at least 600,000 fowls to curb the spread of the disease.
As of August 16, no case of human transmission has been recorded.
Should there be no new cases of the disease in 35 days, Pampanga will be declared bird-flu free, Piñol said.
