MANILA - Malaysia may be the first country to be visited by President Rodrigo Duterte following the invitation of Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak.

Presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella said it is "part of tradition" for the President to visit neighboring ASEAN countries before the Philippines assumes leadership of the regional body for 2017.

Abella said "the ground is being prepared" for the visit which may happen before Duterte's attendance to the ASEAN summit in Laos in September but that the dates have not been finalized yet.

Fighting terrorism and the economy may be among the talking points of the visit to Malaysia.
